A RAM ProMaster is a great choice for building a camper. These cargo vans have a wide interior and boxy shape which makes them easy to design around. If you want to build the perfect ProMaster camper conversion then you’ll need to know the dimensions.

We’ve crunched the data and put together this useful comparison table so you can explore the interior and exterior dimensions of the RAM ProMaster 1500, 2500, 3600, cargo vans, and passenger vans. Let’s get started!

RAM ProMaster Comparison Table

Below you’ll find a comparison table containing interior and exterior dimension of the RAM ProMaster vans. Measurements included in the table are taken from the brochures and spec sheets linked below. Here are some tips for using the chart:

  • We recommend using a desktop to view this chart.
  • You can filter vans by yearstylebody length, and roof height. By default, 10 entries are shown–and you can expand the table to show more.
  • When entering a year, you must include a number in both “from” and “to” fields, then hit “search.”
  • Making a selection will restrict the other available options.
  • Click “details” on the left column of each row to see all known dimensions. Click the red “columns” button to show or hide additional columns for comparison between models.
  • Click the top header of each column to sort by ascending or descending order.
  • If the chart appears blank, try refreshing the page or de-selecting all filters. (Make sure a year between 2014 and 2023 is selected).

History

The RAM ProMaster was introduced to the United States in May, 2014. This was the third generation of the Fiat Ducato which was introduced in Europe in 1981.

Between 2014-2023 there have been some minor updates to the vehicle, but overall dimensions have remained largely the same.

  • First Generation (1981–1993)
    • Fiat Ducato
  • Second Generation (1993-2006)
    • Fiat Ducato
    • Peugeot Boxer
  • Third Generation (2006-present)
    • Peugeot Boxer (Europe)
    • Ram ProMaster (North America)

How To Read Dimensions

Car companies pack a lot of data into their spec sheets. To make sense of them, there are a few things to consider:

Wheelbase

The wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axles of a vehicle. It’s important for interior space planning since it affects the overall length of the vehicle, as well as its turning radius.

Currently, ProMaster cargo vans come in three different wheelbases with four overall body lengths:

  • 118 inch wheelbase
  • 136 inch wheelbase
  • 159 inch wheelbase
  • 159 inch wheelbase extended

The extended wheelbase adds an additional 14 inches in length. ProMaster passenger vans only come with the 159″ wheelbase.

Roof Height

ProMaster vans come with two different height options: standard, and high roof. Most people cannot stand fully upright inside a standard height ProMaster van.

  • Standard roof transit vans: Measure 93 inches (7.75 feet) exterior. 66.9 inches (5 feet 6 inches) interior.
  • High roof transit vans: Measure 103.6 inches (8.6 feet) exterior. 77.1 inches (6 feet 4 inches) interior.

When converting a ProMaster into a camper, you should account for approximately 2-4 inches of insulation on each side. This can reduce your standing height by up to 6 inches!

Doors

Side-door opening height: This is the height of the side door opening from the ground.

Side-door opening width: The width of the sliding door when it’s fully open.

Rear cargo door opening width: The width of the rear cargo door when it’s fully open.

Cargo Capacity

Cargo volume: The cargo volume is total cubic feet available for gear using the length, height, and width of the cargo area. This number is measured behind the drivers seat and is heavily affected by the roof height and length of the vehicle.

Passenger vans have extremely small cargo volumes because they do not include the space available when you take out the seats.

Cargo length, front (at floor): The cargo length is the distance from the front of the vehicle, measured at floor level, to the back of it.

Cargo length, front (at belt): The cargo length is the distance from the front of the vehicle, measured at belt level, to the back of it.

Max floor width: The max floor width is the widest point of the cargo area.

Cargo width between wheelhouses: This is the width of the cargo area between the left and right wheel arches.

Other Numbers

Load height (unloaded): The load height is the distance from the ground to the cargo floor when the vehicle is empty. It so you know how high you’ll have to lift an object to get it into the camper.

Turning radius (curb-to-curb): This is the distance that a vehicle can turn in a full circle, from one curb to the other. This measurement helps you understand how tight a corner your Sprinter can make, which is especially important when attempting to maneuver around tight spaces or tricky parking lots.

Maximum payload: This is the maximum amount of weight (in pounds) that can be safely loaded into the vehicle.

GVWR: The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating gives you an idea of the maximum weight that the Sprinter can handle. This is a combination of vehicle weight and cargo weight.

FAQs

Can you stand in a ProMaster camper van?

High Roof ProMaster vans have a 77.1″ standing height which is about 6 feet, 4 inches tall with no flooring or insulation added. Van lifers should plan to add approximately 2-4 inches of insulation on both the floor and ceiling during the conversion process.

Can you fit a queen-sized mattress in a Ram ProMaster?

The ProMaster has a 75.6″ interior width so it is the only cargo van that allows you to fit a queen-sized mattress sideways with no modifications.

Is a RAM ProMaster good for van life?

ProMaster cargo vans have straight, boxy walls and wide interiors which make them perfect for building out a camper conversion. These vehicles are some of the best vans to live in because you can fit a mattress sideways unlike other cargo vans on the market.
