If you want to convert a Ford Transit into a camper for van life, you need to know the dimensions. We’ve crunched the data and put together this useful comparison table so you can explore the interior and exterior dimensions of the Ford Transit T-150, T-250, T-350, cargo vans, passenger vans, and Transit Trail. Let’s get started!

Ford Transit Comparison Table

Below you’ll find a comparison table containing interior and exterior dimension of the Ford Transit vans. Measurements included in the table are taken from the brochures and spec sheets linked below. Here are some tips for using the chart:

  • We recommend using a desktop to view this chart.
  • You can filter vans by yearstylebody length, and roof height. By default, 10 entries are shown–and you can expand the table to show more.
  • When entering a year, you must include a number in both “from” and “to” fields, then hit “search.”
  • Making a selection will restrict the other available options.
  • Click “details” on the left column of each row to see all known dimensions. Click the red “columns” button to show or hide additional columns for comparison between models.
  • Click the top header of each column to sort by ascending or descending order.
  • If the chart appears blank, try refreshing the page or de-selecting all filters. (Make sure a year between 2015 and 2023 is selected).

How to read dimensions

Car companies pack a lot of data into their spec sheets. To make sense of them, there are a few things to consider:

ford transit wheelbase dimensions

Wheelbase

The wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axles of a vehicle. It’s important for interior space planning since it affects the overall length of the vehicle, as well as its turning radius.

Currently, cargo transit vans come in three different wheelbases:

  • 130 inch wheelbase
  • 148 inch wheelbase
  • 148 inch wheelbase extended

The extended wheelbase adds an additional 28 inches in length.

Transit passenger vans come in all three wheelbases as well (although you can only get the 148″ extended wheelbase with a dual-rear wheel setup).

roof height options for the ford transit

Roof Height

Transit vans come with three different height options: standard, medium, and high roof. Most people cannot stand fully upright inside a standard height transit van.

  • Standard roof transit vans: Measure 83.9 inches (7 feet) exterior. 56.9 inches (4 feet 7 inches) interior.
  • Medium roof transit vans: Measure 100.8 inches (8.4 feet) exterior. 72 inches (6 feet) interior.
  • High roof transit vans: Measure 110.1 inches (8.3 feet) exterior. 81.5 inches (6 feet 7 inches) interior.

When converting a transit into a camper, you should account for approximately 2-4 inches of insulation on each side. This can reduce your standing height by up to 6 inches!

The maximum cargo height of a medium roof transit van is 72 inches. The maximum cargo height of a high roof transit van is 110.1 inches.

Doors

Side-door opening height: This is the height of the side door opening from the ground.

Side-door opening width: The width of the sliding door when it’s fully open.

Rear cargo door opening width: The width of the rear cargo door when it’s fully open.

Cargo Capacity

Cargo volume: The cargo volume is total cubic feet available for gear using the length, height, and width of the cargo area. This number is measured behind the drivers seat and is heavily affected by the roof height and length of the vehicle.

Passenger vans have extremely small cargo volumes because they do not include the space available when you take out the seats.

Cargo length, front (at floor): The cargo length is the distance from the front of the vehicle, measured at floor level, to the back of it.

Cargo length, front (at belt): The cargo length is the distance from the front of the vehicle, measured at belt level, to the back of it.

Max floor width: The max floor width is the widest point of the cargo area.

Cargo width between wheelhouses: This is the width of the cargo area between the left and right wheel arches.

Other Numbers

Load height (unloaded): The load height is the distance from the ground to the cargo floor when the vehicle is empty. It so you know how high you’ll have to lift an object to get it into the camper.

Turning radius (curb-to-curb): This is the distance that a vehicle can turn in a full circle, from one curb to the other. This measurement helps you understand how tight a corner your Sprinter can make, which is especially important when attempting to maneuver around tight spaces or tricky parking lots.

Maximum payload: This is the maximum amount of weight (in pounds) that can be safely loaded into the vehicle.

GVWR: The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating gives you an idea of the maximum weight that the Sprinter can handle. This is a combination of vehicle weight and cargo weight.

Fourth Generation Transit

The Ford Transit has a long history, dating all the way back to 1965 when the Ford T-Series was produced.

FAQs

Can you stand in a Transit van?

High Roof Transit vans have a 81.5″ standing height which is about 6 feet, 7 inches tall. The medium roof height for a Transit van is 72″ which is 6 feet from the cargo floor to the ceiling.

How much does insulation reduce a Transit van ceiling height?

Most people will add 2-4 inches of insulation on both the floor and roof of the van which will reduce the headroom up to 6 inches.

Can you fit a queen-sized mattress in a Transit van?

The maximum cargo width of a Transit van is 67.9″ so you can fit a queen-sized camper van mattress width-wise but not sideways. Van lifers can add vehicle flares to accommodate a larger mattress.

148″ or 148″ Extended Transit, which is best for van life?

The 148″ extended van will add approximately 28 inches of buildable space to the inside of your vehicle. Longer vans can be harder to maneuver and park in tight spaces, but they give you more livable area inside.

The 130″ Transit with a standard roof height is less than 7 feet tall and only 219.9″ long.

Is a medium roof height transit good for short people?

Absolutely, the interior height of a medium roof Ford Transit is approximately 6 feet, which can provide ample headroom for individuals of average height or shorter. Additionally, it offers a balance between comfort and maneuverability, making it ideal for those new to van life.

What is the difference between a mid roof vs high roof Ford Transit?

A key difference between a mid-roof and high-roof Ford Transit lies in their interior height. A mid-roof model offers a standing height of approximately 6 feet, which is ample for most individuals. In contrast, a high-roof Ford Transit provides a standing height of about 6 feet 7 inches, offering more headroom and space for larger amenities or storage.
